The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has initiated an immediate probe into the allegations of presentation of multiple birth dates by athletes during the 2025 African U18 and U20 Championships held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World Athletics wants a clarification on the allegations involving a few Nigerian athletes currently under investigation.
In a statement in Abuja and signed by the Secretary-General of the AFN, Israel Inwang, the Federation’s President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, said AFN under his leadership frowns at age cheats and will investigate the current matter.
Chief Okowa, said he would announce an investigative committee today, Monday, December 8, to unravel the allegations and ensure any athletes or coaches found culpable would be sanctioned accordingly.
“We must protect the integrity of the game and the image of our country, Nigeria. I have remained an advocate of fairness and sticking to rules in under-age competitions and I do not want to believe that any of our athletes or officials would be involved in possible age cheats. We shall resolve this current issues before us.”
